What is included in half board?

Classic half board means that, in addition to your overnight stay, breakfast and dinner are included in the price. In wellness hotels you will also come across three-quarter board. Here a lunchtime or afternoon option is added to breakfast and dinner, such as a buffet, a snack or cake. How much that includes and what the property calls its meal plan vary. What counts is therefore the description of the offer you book.

Half board or three-quarter board

Classic half board does not include lunch. Some hotels offer a dish or an à la carte menu at lunchtime for an extra charge. With three-quarter board, an additional option is already included. This may be an afternoon buffet with salads, soups and cake, an afternoon snack or a hot lunch dish with a buffet. The scope varies from property to property.

What three-quarter board adds

Half board includes breakfast and dinner. Three-quarter board also includes a lunchtime or afternoon option, for example a snack, cake or a buffet. Exactly what is offered is stated in the hotel's description.

Breakfast and dinner

Depending on the property, breakfast is a buffet, sometimes supplemented with freshly prepared dishes. Dinner can vary widely: a multicourse menu with a choice of dishes, sometimes with a salad buffet, an à la carte menu or a set menu served to all guests at the same time. Some properties have set seating times for dinner, invite guests to a gala dinner on certain evenings or have a day when the restaurant is closed.

What the term leaves open

The term half board does not say whether drinks with dinner are included. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or lactose-free dishes are also handled differently: at some properties they are part of the menu, at others they are available if requested in advance. And depending on the property, meals are already included in the room price, can be booked as an extra or, for certain types of accommodation such as apartments, are only available at an extra charge.

Half board and three-quarter board also refer only to meals. They do not say whether the spa, pool and sauna, treatments, activities or parking are included in the price.

What to clarify before booking

Read the description of what is included in the offer you want to book. If something that matters to you is left open there, such as a lunchtime or afternoon option, drinks or a special diet, ask the hotel before booking.
