Why car-free? Because it works

The Dolomites are one of the most impressive natural areas in Europe. But with increasing popularity comes more traffic – especially in summer. Many regions are therefore promoting car-free mobility, combining comfort, sustainability, and landscape protection. The good news: you can already reach almost all highlights without a car – whether it’s the Tre Cime, Lago di Braies, Seiser Alm or Cortina d’Ampezzo.

By train into the Dolomites

Those who want to travel sustainably should start by train. Major railway stations such as Bolzano, Bressanone, Fortezza, Dobbiaco, Brunico, or San Candido provide solid bases. From there, regional buses or organized shuttles take you further. Particularly convenient: the Nightjet once again goes directly to Bolzano and Fortezza – often with bike transport. The early arrival makes it possible to start your day right away, for example to the Seiser Alm or the Sellaronda.

Many connections can be combined: night train, regional train, and bus link together into one seamless travel chain. Early booking means lower prices and more relaxed journeys.

Shuttles, closures & local mobility

Between May 31 and October 12, the road to the Tre Cime can only be accessed by shuttle or with a valid reservation. Shuttle 444 runs from Dobbiaco, San Candido, and Misurina directly to the Rifugio Auronzo. Sunrise rides are especially popular – book your time slots early.

The Braies Valley is also closed daily from July 10 to September 10, between 9 am and 4 pm. To visit Lago di Braies, the official shuttle departs from Villabassa or Monguelfo. Reservations with fixed time slots are also required here, especially in high season.

The Seiser Alm is also accessible without cars. Between 9 am and 5 pm, the road is closed. Buses from Siusi or Castelrotto run regularly to the cable car station. Alternatively, the Seiser Alm cable car takes you up comfortably and barrier-free.

Cortina d’Ampezzo is connected via the Cortina Express to trains in Treviso or Venice. For hikers in Belluno, the Alleghe Link is available. Direct connections from Venice to several Dolomite towns are already in place or being planned – it’s worth checking the latest timetables.

Mobilcard South Tyrol – Flexible and easy travel

The best way to get around South Tyrol is with the Mobilcard. It allows unlimited use of trains, buses, city and regional lines, as well as selected cable cars. The 3-day version costs about €45, the 7-day version about €65. The card is available at railway stations, tourist offices, and through many accommodations. Some hotels even provide the Mobilcard or Holidaypass free of charge – ideal for families or weekly planners.

The card is not valid for all shuttles requiring reservations, such as to the Plätzwiese, Lago di Braies, or the Tre Cime – single tickets are required here. Children under six travel free on many lines.

How to plan your car-free trip

First, choose your starting station – for example Bolzano, Bressanone, or Dobbiaco. Then check your onward journey by regional train or bus. For popular destinations such as Lago di Braies or the Tre Cime, early online reservations are recommended. A Mobilcard or guest card gives you maximum flexibility on site. If you are traveling with a bike or stroller, be sure to check transport rules in advance.
