Few places in the Dolomites are photographed more often than Lago di Braies, also known as Pragser Wildsee. The emerald-green water, steep rock walls, and the iconic wooden boat at the pier have made it a legend – not just online but also in collective travel memory. The lake lies at 1,496 m, reaches depths of up to 36 m, and is embedded in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. Since 2009, it has been part of the UNESCO Dolomites World Natural Heritage Site, specifically site no. 1237-6.

The number of parking spaces is limited (P1–P4), and daily quotas sell out quickly – especially at sunrise. Those wanting to photograph at this time should book early. The measure is intended to protect the fragile ecosystem around the lake and improve the visitor experience.

Lake circuit & viewpoints

The circuit around the lake is well developed, technically easy, and takes about 1.5 hours. The usual starting point is the wooden boathouse on the northern shore, seen on countless postcards and Instagram shots. The trail runs along the shore, past larch forests, quiet coves, and always with views of Croda del Becco – a mountain perfectly reflected in the water when it is calm.

A particularly rewarding viewpoint lies on the southeastern shore, where the light reflects on the water surface during the golden hour. Those aiming higher can hike toward the Croda del Becco trail – but only suitable for experienced mountain hikers with sure footing.

Rowing on Lago di Braies

A visit without a boat ride is almost considered incomplete. The boathouse from the 1920s rents out traditional wooden rowboats – for about €25–30 per half hour (as of 2025). Demand is high, so online reservation is recommended here as well. Mornings often offer mirror-smooth water – perfect for photos and relaxed rides.

Drone flights are prohibited throughout the area. Always respect the marked no-fly zones and check local regulations beforehand.
