Wellness Val Pusteria Brunico: Seven Wellness Hotels between Plan de Corones and Three Peaks

The Val Pusteria is the east-west main axis of South Tyrol and connects the Eisacktal with East Tyrol over about 100 kilometres of valley floor. If you are looking for a wellness holiday in the Val Pusteria, you get a region with three wellness districts within reach. Central Val Pusteria around Brunico with the Plan de Corones, eastern Val Pusteria with the Three Peaks and Lake Braies as the Dolomite gateway, and the Valle di Tures e Aurina as the northern side valley with glacier views. This article guides you through the most important wellness hotels of the region and sorts them by location, orientation and season.

Why Val Pusteria Is Different for Wellness

The Val Pusteria has a different wellness character than Merano. While Merano is city, promenade and spa tradition, the Val Pusteria is mountain, valley and nature hotel. The houses are mostly 4 star superior or 5 star, with spa areas between 1500 and 4000 square metres. The style is alpine, often with lots of wood, local stone and panoramic windows that frame the valley or the Plan de Corones. The climate is pleasantly cool in summer with 22 to 28 degrees, in winter rather dry-cold with reliable snow between December and March.

Arrival is via the Val Pusteria road from Brixen South or via the Val Pusteria railway from Bolzano and Innsbruck with a change at Fortezza. Anyone arriving from Munich drives the A22 to Brixen and then turns east, travel time about four hours from the Munich city border. If you are looking for a quality wellness holiday in South Tyrol in general, you find the overarching selection logic in the Wellness Hotels South Tyrol pillar article, and in the South Tyrol Regions Guide the comparison of all seven regions.

The Eight Wellness Hotels at a Glance

We group the houses by location. First the axis Brunico with Val Pusteria and Plan de Corones at the centre, then the eastern Dolomite side with Anterselva, San Candido and Toblach, then the Valle di Tures e Aurina.

Brunico and Val Pusteria Axis

Three houses lie in the corridor between Rio di Pusteria and Brunico.

The active lifestyle hotel Terentnerhof is located on the Terento sun plateau at around 1200 metres altitude, between Val Pusteria and Eisacktal. The house addresses active vacationers with a sport-spa profile, meaning sauna landscape, indoor and outdoor pool, fitness studio and large active programme in summer and winter. The Plan de Corones is 25 minutes away by car, the Plose 30 minutes. This makes the Terentnerhof the intersection of the two mountain railways.

The Ferien und Wellness Hotel Windschar is located between Brunico and Campo Tures and is a classic family hotel with a large spa. Parents get a quiet wellness area for adults, children their own pools and programme. The Plan de Corones is 15 minutes away, Campo Tures 10 minutes, the Rieserferner Ahrn Nature Park centre almost at the doorstep.

The Hotel Fameli is a smaller family-style address with Dolomite view and solid spa. Unlike the large resorts, the Fameli focuses on personal service and manageable size.

Eastern Dolomite Side

Three houses lie in the eastern Val Pusteria and in the Anterselva valley, meaning on the line Valdaora, Anterselva, Toblach, San Candido.

The Falkensteiner Hotel Antholz is located in the Anterselva valley at around 1100 metres altitude. The valley is a dead end, which excludes traffic and guarantees silence. In winter central for biathlon and cross-country, the Anterselva Biathlon Arena is a World Cup venue. In summer a hiking paradise in the Rieserferner Ahrn Nature Park with Lake Braies and Lake Toblach within reach.

The Hotel Alpen Tesitin is located above Valdaora on a sun terrace with panoramic views over the Val Pusteria and the Dolomites. The house is one of the architecturally most expressive in the region, with large spa area and infinity pool. If you are looking for the iconic pool view over the Dolomites, you find it here.

The Naturhotel Leitlhof in San Candido is one of the most consistent sustainability hotels in Europe. Own wood chip plant, almost completely CO2 neutral, bio kitchen, spa with local wood and natural materials. The Three Peaks are 20 minutes away, the Tre Cime Dolomites ski areas directly at the doorstep. If you want to combine wellness with sustainability, you have here one of the top addresses in Italy.

Val Badia and Ladinia

In Val Badia, south of Bruneck and at the gateway to Alta Badia, sits the Aqua Bad Cortina BIOHotel & Thermal Baths in St. Vigil in Enneberg. The 3 star BIOHotel stands out with its own historic thermal spring, organic cuisine and an honest, nature centred spa approach. Anyone seeking authenticity rather than glamour, and interested in Ladin culture and the Fanes Senes Braies nature park, finds the right house here.

Valle di Tures e Aurina

One address lies in the Valle di Tures e Aurina as a transition region from the Val Pusteria to the Ahrntal.

The AMONTI and LUNARIS Wellnessresort is one of the largest wellness resorts in South Tyrol with two connected hotels run as one house. The spa area comprises over 5000 square metres with several saunas, pools, relaxation zones and an Adults Only area. The location in Cadipietra at about 1050 metres brings mountain silence and Valle di Tures e Aurina character. The Plan de Corones is 35 minutes away, the Klausberg and Speikboden mountain railways 5 to 15 minutes.

What Distinguishes the Region in Wellness Terms

Three points make the Val Pusteria special as a wellness region.

First the spa size. The houses here have above-average spa areas, the AMONTI and LUNARIS with over 5000 square metres, the Alpen Tesitin and Windschar each between 2500 and 3500 square metres. If you are looking for spa variety, meaning several saunas, pools and relaxation worlds, you are right here.

Second the double season. Unlike Merano, which has a long mainstream season, the Val Pusteria has two clearly separated peaks. Summer July August and winter February March. Both seasons are fully booked, both have higher prices. The off-seasons May, June and October as well as November and early December are quieter and 20 to 30 percent cheaper. The best wellness windows without bustle are therefore mid May to mid June and mid September to mid October.

Third the proximity to nature. Three nature parks meet here, Rieserferner Ahrn, Fanes Sennes Braies and Three Peaks. That is 1000 square kilometres of protected area within reach of each of the named hotels, without industry, without big city, without noise background. If you are looking for a wellness holiday in the classic sense, meaning retreat from everyday life, you have here the best geographic prerequisites.

Activities Around the Wellness Hotels

Summer Activities

Hiking is the main activity. From the alpine pasture walk at Lake Braies to the Three Peaks circumnavigation there are tours for every level. Mountain biking on the Plan de Corones with its own bike park, road biking on the Furkel and Staller passes. Swimming in Lake Toblach and Issinger Weiher. Via ferratas at Speikboden and the Braies Dolomites. Yoga retreats on the high plateaus, several of the hotels offer guided sessions.

Winter Activities

Skiing on the Plan de Corones with 119 kilometres of slopes and the high-speed connection Skirama Plan de Corones Sextner Dolomites. Skiing in the Sextner Dolomites with three valleys and a view of the Three Peaks. Cross-country on the tracks in Anterselva, Toblach and Braies Valley, the track network is one of the largest in Italy. Ski tours in the Casies valley and Valle di Tures e Aurina. Snowshoeing on the Plätzwiese and in the Rieserferner Ahrn Nature Park. Tobogganing on the natural toboggan runs at Klausberg and Plan de Corones.

Wellness and Spa Activities

Hay baths in the Val Pusteria are a tradition of their own, several houses offer classic Pustertal hay baths with warm fermented hay. Mountain pine oil baths with the oil of the mountain pine from the high altitudes. Mountain whey treatments from the dairy. Singing bowls and mindfulness on the high plateaus.

Cuisine in the Val Pusteria

The Pustertal cuisine is hearty and very distinctive. Speck dumplings, mutton ham, farmer's gröstl with nettle in spring, tirtlan as filled pastry pockets are the classics. Pustertal Sprinzen, an old spotted cattle breed, is a regional speciality and appears on many restaurant menus. Cheese from the alpine pastures, especially Graukäse and mountain cheese, is mandatory fare. For dessert Kaiserschmarrn or apple strudel with cinnamon and vanilla. Wine does not come from the region but from the Eisacktal and South of South Tyrol, but the menus usually have a good selection.

The Right Season for Your Stay

We go through the seasons and show what Val Pusteria experience lies behind each.

Mid May to mid June is the quietest spring phase. Valley floor green, mountain slopes still partially snow-covered, high alpine pastures from 1800 metres still closed. Ideal for wellness focus with short walks and some valley hikes. Prices are here 20 to 30 percent below high season.

July and August are hiking season. High alpine pastures open, all mountain railways in operation, Lake Braies crowded. Prices are high, availability low. If you want July and August, you have to book four to six months in advance.

Mid September to mid October is golden autumn. Foliage colouring starts mid September at 2000 metres and moves down to the valley floor by early October. Larches turn golden yellow, rowan trees orange-red, the views are clearer than in summer due to drier air. Hiking until early October possible without restrictions.

December to mid January is pre-Christmas and Christmas season. Brunico has a very atmospheric Christmas market, also San Candido and Toblach. Ski areas open in early December.

February and March are ski high season. Full slopes, best snow conditions, high prices. In March the snow in the valley floors already becomes softer, in the high altitudes on the Plan de Corones and in the Sextner Dolomites it is stable until end of March.

End of March to mid April is transition to spring. Several houses then have a seasonal pause for two to three weeks. If you want to travel here, you should check the hotel availability beforehand.

Families, Couples and Adults Only in the Val Pusteria

Families are well placed at the Windschar and Alpen Tesitin. Both houses have children's pools, family rooms and programme for several age groups. The Plan de Corones with family ski cards and bike park completes the picture.

Couples and Adults Only find at AMONTI and LUNARIS a dedicated adults area, at the Naturhotel Leitlhof the quiet atmosphere of a sustainable hotel with a small number of rooms. The Falkensteiner Antholz is cross-generation but automatically has a quiet character due to the quiet valley. If you explicitly want Adults Only with complete child lockout, read the Adults Only Wellness Hotels South Tyrol cluster for houses with clear Adults Only policy.

Prices and Costs in the Val Pusteria Wellness Segment

Val Pusteria wellness is priced between mid-range and premium. Four-star superior houses start in low season at about 180 to 220 euro per person and night with half board. In high season July August and February March that shifts to 280 to 380 euro. Five-star houses start at about 280 euro low season and reach up to 500 euro high season. Complete breakdown can be found in the Wellness Hotels South Tyrol Costs cluster.

Compared to Merano, the Val Pusteria is slightly cheaper on average, especially in the off-seasons. In high season, prices approach or even exceed Merano, particularly in the ski high weeks in February and the summer weeks in July.

Connection to the Dolomites and the Ahrntal

The Val Pusteria is a springboard into two more regions. Whoever wants to take day trips from here has the following options.

Day trip Dolomites from central Val Pusteria. By car via Villabassa to Toblach, then on the high road to Three Peaks view and Lake Misurina. Return via Cortina. About 4 to 5 hours round trip without hikes, with hike to the Auronzo hut and back 6 to 8 hours.

Day trip Ahrntal. From Brunico to Campo Tures, then on into the upper Ahrntal to Cadipietra and Predoi. Riva Waterfalls as a short hike, Predoi Mining Museum for indoor programme, Taufers Castle as a cultural stop.

Val Badia and Alta Badia. From Brunico via San Vigilio to La Valle and La Villa. Ladin culture, hikes at the Sasso di Santa Croce, in winter ski connection with Dolomiti Superski.

If you want more regional depth, read the South Tyrol Regions Guide with the overview of all seven regions.

Booking Tips and Availability

Three points for the concrete booking.

First lead time. In summer July August and winter February March you need four to six months lead time for the good houses. In off-seasons four weeks are often enough, last-minute even a week. Second length of stay. Most houses in the Val Pusteria have minimum stays of 3 to 4 nights in high season, in low season usually 2 nights. Third combinations. Anyone who wants city after the wellness stay continues afterwards to Brixen or Merano and books two additional nights there.

Conclusion

The Val Pusteria is the right region if you want to combine wellness with mountain, silence and a sporty component. Seven wellness hotels from the Brunico axis to San Candido, from the Valle di Tures e Aurina to the Anterselva valley, cover all profiles. Classic family hotel with large spa, Adults Only with pool and panorama, sustainability hotel with natural materials, sport-oriented active hotel with bike programme. Which style appeals to you most depends on your travel goal. If you want mountain skiing and spa, go towards Valdaora or San Candido. If you want silence, into the Anterselva valley. If you are a family, to the Windschar or Alpen Tesitin. If you want maximum spa size, to the AMONTI and LUNARIS. One region, seven paths.
